Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituency located at the Southernmost tip of West Bengal for a long time was a Left stronghold. In 2009, TMC managed to break the solid Left bastion of the Left and since then the SC -reserved candidate of Mathurapur has been under TMC rule.

There was much speculation whether TMC will give ticket to Choudhary Mohan Jatua, the sitting MP considering he is 80 years old. But finally Jatua got the nod and he is up against Shyamaprasad Haldar of BJP, Sarat Haldar of CPI(M) and Krittibas Sardar of Congress.

Historically, the CPI(M) has won the seat nine times,  Congress twice, CPI once and TMC twice. Radha Ranjan Pramanik of CPI(M) won the seat five times in a row.

While Jatua's record as a parliamentarian is modest with him not able to spend nearly 18% of MPLAD fund, TMC is ahead of others owing to better organisation and the groundwork done by the Mamata Banerjee government. Mathurapur Lok Sabha consists of Assembly segments Patharpratima, Kakdwip,Sagar ,Kulpi ,Raidighi, Mandirbazar (SC) andMagrahat Paschim.

Many of these places were ravaged by Ayala storm nearly a decade ago and the state government has done significant work to rehabilitate affected people. While Left for long time enjoyed complete support, this southernmost tip of South Bengal was largely undeveloped. The steps taken by Mamata Banerjee seem to have a positive effect though much still remains to be done. Unemployment remains a big issue and Mamata Banerjee in her campaign trail repeatedly stressed on youth getting hands-on skill based training to get employable.

PM Modi too campaigned in Mathurapur to raise the poll pitch but BJP is traditionally weak here. In the last election, Jatua won by 1.38 lakh votes over CPM's Rinku Nashkar. BJP candidate only got 5% votes. On May 19, voters will decide whether Mathurapur will choose a new winner or not.
