Amid fears, the security agencies have launched a massive hunt to identify the people responsible for waving flags of dreaded Islamic State (IS) in old Srinagar city.

Jammu and Kashmir police have put the investigations on the fast track to unravel the truth behind the waving of IS flags in the summer capital city at a time when the state is battling the fallout of the worst ever floods.

"Case is under investigation. We are investigating the matter at this moment," Kondaveeti Rajendra Kumar, director general of police, Jammu and Kashmir, told dna.

There have been series of incidents since July when masked men surfaced in old city and waved IS flags in old city. In fact dna was the first to report on July 30 about the masked men who surfaced after the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at Eidgah and waved black flags and banners of IS and al Qaeda with Kalima (the first basic fundamental of Islam) inscribed on them.

It was followed by waving of IS flags on Eid-ul-Azha (Bakr Eid) at the same venue on Monday, October 6. Later, the masked men again surfaced and waved the flags after Friday prayers on October 10, in old city sparking new worries about the radicalisation of the youth in Kashmir.

There are large number of foreign militants mostly Pakistani operating in Kashmir and they work under the banner of Lashkar-e-Tioba, Jaish-e-Mohommad, Al Bader, Hizb-ul-Mujhadeen and others.

Security forces have not found any clues about the presence of IS or al-Qaeda in Kashmir though they were rattled when al-Qaeda released a video in June calling upon the Muslims in Kashmir to wage Jihad against Indian authorities.

"I do not think there is any identified module of IS or al-Qaeda in Jammu and Kashmir. When we will arrest them (those who waved the flags) we will be in a better position to shed light on this issue," said an intelligence source.

Police sources said the cops had picked up several suspects after the IS flags first appeared in the old city. However, they were released soon after as the agencies could not found anything serious against them.
