Hurriyat hardliner Masarat Alam, in an interview with Hindustan Times, spoke about his recent release and the furore it has created. Speaking against Omar Abdullah's statement that he was a security  threat, Alam cited that he spent his years in jail for the dream of freedom and he was no Osama bin Laden.

Alam, who instigated one of the biggest revolts against the Army in Kashmir in 2010, claims that protest was a genuine uprising resulting from Kashmiris not wanting to be with India. He called for an international probe to prove that he instigated people to protest.

Alam says that there hasn't been much change in the state during the period of he spent in jail. Despite the high percentage of voters in the state, he says that there is no relation between the large voter turnouts during elections and acceptance of India in Jammu and Kashmir.  He calls for referendum to see whether the people of Jammu and Kashmir want to stay with India and prove that the Government of India has support in the state.

On his release, Alam states with pessimism that he has stepped out into the larger jail that is Kashmir. He also said that his release was facilitated through due legal process and not a favour done by the Mufti Sayeed government.
