Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s entry in the Rajya Sabha on Friday created a storm of sorts when he came to convey his gratitude to the members for their cooperation during his tenure as the defence minister.

As soon as Parrikar entered the Rajya Sabha during zero hour and was allowed by the deputy chairman P J Kurien to speak, Congress general secretary in-charge of Goa Digvijaya Singh rose in protest  saying, “We cannot allow him. He killed democracy in Goa...he has stolen the mandate of Goa...”

An unwavering Parrikar first thanked the chairman Hamid Ansari, deputy chairman P J Kurien and the House for supporting him as the Raksha Mantri and then he turned to Digvijaya Singh and said with a smile, “I also thank Shri Digvijaya Singh ji, because he was roaming around in Goa and I was able to form the Government in Goa.”

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh who was pipped down by the super active BJP to form the government in Goa. Minutes before Parrikar’s entry, Digvijaya Singh was inquiring about his substantive motion on the role of governors of Goa and Manipur on government formation and wanted Chair’s intervention to seek time from the leader of the house for a debate.

Even as Parrikar was speaking, several Congress members including Rajeev Gowda, Hussain Dalwai as well as Rajni Patil, reached the Well of the House raising slogans against the former defence minister. In response, some BJP members too stood up and shouted slogans.

As the shouting continued, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien stood up to bring order in the House. After that, Congress MPs piped down.

Amid the ruckus, junior parliamentary affairs minister, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also took a dig saying that the former defence minister had expressed a “special thanks” to Digvijaya Singhji.
