According to sources, the Prime Minister's Office has already given a go-ahead on the project to the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry, which has asked All India Radio (AIR) to implement the plan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat will soon be broadcast across the country simultaneously in various regional languages, along with the original Hindi address given at 11 am on Sunday. The move is aimed at ensuring a better reach of the Prime Minister's message to every nook and corner of the country by overcoming linguistic barriers between states.
According to sources, the Prime Minister's Office has already given a go-ahead on the project to the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry, which has asked All India Radio (AIR) to implement the plan.
"It was discovered that people in the southern states are finding it difficult to follow the Mann Ki Baat in Hindi. To avoid this communication gap, the original message in Hindi will be clubbed or superimposed with the translated version of the message in different states," a senior official said.
AIR which airs the Prime Minister's weekly address, may either outsource the job of translation or get it done by contracted announcers.
"It will be first experimented upon on a few speeches and if it works well, it will be made a permanent feature. AIR is working on setting up the system," the official said.
The regional and the English versions of Mann Ki Baat are played at 8pm on the same day at AIR stations in state capitals and AIR stations including local radio stations in individual states. People can also dial the toll-free number 1922 to listen to the address in their language of choice. However, government officials feel relaying the address in the regional language at the actual time of the broadcast will give better results.
The radio address is broadcast by the entire network of AIR, including all stations, all AIR FM channels (FM Gold and FM Rainbow), local radio stations, Vividh Bharati Stations and five community radio stations as well as a few private radio channels. Doordarshan, other private TV, news channels in India also air the address simultaneously.
It is also broadcast by the Urdu and Hindi Services of the External Services of All India Radio for the Indian Diaspora outside the country, and by the General Overseas Service.
