Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed students preparing for board exams through his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme and advised them to compete with themselves.

Stating that he had been an ordinary student, PM Modi said, "I have not scored exceptionally well in  exams. We must never waste our energy and capability in competing with others. Your future should be better than your today."

Citing the example of Ukrainian pole vault legend Sergei Bubka, who has beaten his own record 35 times, the Prime Minister said one should compete with oneself and not measure success with the achievements of others.

Modi further added, "There are different types of students, but irrespective of the type, performing well in exams is important. It is very important to know yourself. There are some students that work on new targets each day, with a new vision and new energy. Your determination and thought process must be stable. Don't think of competing with someone else, think about surpassing your own limits with each passing day, set a new record everyday."

Giving an example from Cricket, PM Modi asked students to live in the present and not in past. He said, "A good batsman is thinking about the ball he is facing not about the match, or series. He is thinking about the present."

Further, asking student to have faith and not to be nervous, Modi added, "Many students get nervous during exam time. I don't think one should get nervous, have faith in yourselves. If you gain mastery over a subject, nervousness does not stand a chance. Place your trust in the hard work that you have put in. Believe that no matter how tough the paper was, you will get through."

Prime Minister Modi requested the parents not to compare their children with others, as doing so causes stress among the kids.

Emphasising that exams should not be made an issue of life and death, the Prime Minister suggested holding of 'pariksha utsav' (exam festival) twice a year as also poetry, debate and cartoon competitions to reduce the "scare" of exams.

Cautioning that a state of tension was not good for students, he said the students should "discover" themselves and appear for the exams as if it was some kind of a festival.

Underlining that the youth power is very crucial for the country's future, Modi said they should not have fluctuating desires as that makes them lack resolve in life.

'Mann Ki Baat’ was started in October last year and has covered topics like ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’, rising cases of drug addiction in the country and black money.

Towards the end, Modi said, "The brighter your future is, the brighter India will be. It is you who will shape India's future. Every child of this nation must be happy. Give the exam happily, with a smile on your face. I am sure you will do well."

Last month, Prime Minister Modi and US President Barack Obama had jointly addressed the nation via the programme.
