Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Sunday that the BJP-led government at the Centre has mismanaged Kashmir's situation and it is deteriorating each day.

Speaking at the 84th Plenary of Congress, Singh said Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, and that the state's special problems must be dealt with seriousness.

The former PM said that the Narendra Modi government has installed a government in J&K, where its "two wings are working against each other", referring to an unlikely alliance between PDP and BJP that is seen to have led to differing points of view from time to time.

"That is obvious from the fact that our borders are not secure. Whether it is cross-border terrorism or internal terrorism or insurgency," said Singh. He added that the Modi government is nowhere close to any solution, and is also lagging in means to tackle the problems.

"(They) probably feel that these issues can probably be sorted out by themselves. That's not going to happen," he said.

Singh said that the government needs to create an environment of mutual understanding and support with its immediate neighbours such as Bangladesh and Pakistan. He added that any problem that emanates in bilateral relationships with neighbours should be sorted out peacefully and not "by shouting at each other".

He said that Pakistan should be delivered a firm message about the active role it plays in cross-border terrorism, and that this is not acceptable to India.

"We must, therefore, warn Pakistan that this is a path, which is mutually destructive of peace and prosperity in the sub-continent. This is as much in the interest of Pakistan as it is in the interest of India that our two countries must sort out all problems sitting together peacefully and give up this path of support of terrorist elements emanating from our borders," said Singh.
