On his first visit to Kolkata after CPI(M) lost Tripura assembly election, former Chief Minister and party politburo member Manik Sarkar said that even if Congress’ policies were responsible for the ascent of BJP in the country, Congress never believed in involving religion in politics.

He also said that the aim of the Left Front, at present should be to build unity among people of all class of society to bring back secularism and to dethrone BJP. About four months after he lost Tripura, Sarkar eas tied up in the state and couldn't visit Kolkata. Party sources said that he was busy tackling the newly-formed BJP government there.

Ahead of the budget session at the Agartala Assembly, he came to attend a party event in Kolkata. Among the audience were top Left leaders including Left Front chairman Biman Bose. Political analysts said that in spite of criticising Congress, his call for a broader unity has sent a positive message to leaders at Alimuddin Street who are in favour of joining hands with Congress.

Talking about the present BJP rule, Sarkar, during his deliberation elaborated on the economic condition of the country. He said that the economy under Modi’s rule has deteriorated in the last four years and the BJP government had failed to live up to any of their assurances which they had made before coming to power. “Figures of Labour Bureau of India says that in the last four years, not even one crore people have got jobs but more than a crore had lost their jobs,” he said.

Sarkar said that the Left Front has a significant role to play in the moment of crisis, for the sake of the labour class people. The party needed to bring together people irrespective of caste and creed to oust the BJP government in the next 2019 election.
