Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Mani Shankar Aiyar said at the AICC session venue here on Friday that Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi can never become the prime minister and that he is welcome to sell tea at the next AICC session.

Aiyar’s caustic remarks triggered outrage on the Twitter, with even Congress ally National Conference leader and Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah reacting adversely to Aiyar’s comment. ““Modi has a lot of negatives but his humble origins are a positive some of us can’t claim. We aren’t helping our campaign by mocking him.”

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javdekar said that the comment showed the low levels that Aiyar could fall to and that it also reflected the mental state of the party and the person. Leader of opposition Arun Jaitley said that the strength of democracy will be proved when “a former tea vendor defeats the dynasty’s representative .”

Aiyar remained defiantly unrepentant and he did not see any need for apology.
