A home for retired priests of the Mangaluru diocese was inaugurated on Tuesday in Jeppu, Karnataka. Spread over an area of 0.99 acres at St Antony’s Charity Institute, the St Zuze Vaz Home is a modern, functional residential complex which can accommodate a dozen priests and has a small chapel, reported Daijiworld.

The inauguration was followed by a Eucharistic mass which was presided over by Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangaluru diocese and others present were Fr Denis D’Souza, Sr Celine Cutinho, founder of ‘Missionary Sisters of Jesus’ for nuns, and other priests among many laymen.

“St Zuze Vaz was a great servant of God. His work for God has enabled him to be declared a saint. Priests live and serve in very tough conditions. All to keep the faith in Christ alive. The retired priests can now live in this newly inaugurated home. God bless this place,” said Fr Clifford Fernandes

MLA JR Lobo, also present at the event, reportedly requested the priests to start hostel facilities in churches to help the poor with accommodation and education.

“There are a lot of teaching opportunities in north Karnataka. Students in Bijapur, Gulbaraga and others need teachers. If we start this now, I am sure we will have a landmark improvement in another 50 years,” said Lobo.

Pointing out how priests often face isolation after retirement as they leave their family behind to follow the path of Christ, Fr D’Souza said, “Every priest has contributed. The new chapel has been dedicated to the priests. Retired priests can now live together instead of staying in isolation”.

Spread over two floors, there are a total of 34 rooms on single-occupancy basis. One floor of the Home is to accommodate the convent of care-taker nuns from the Missionary Sisters of Jesus congregation.
