Carnatic musician Shri Uppalapu Srinivas, sometimes called the Mandolin Srinivas for his expertise at playing the instrument, passed away in a private hospital in Chennai this morning. Media reports suggested that the musician had undergone liver transplant recently but developed complications which led to his death. He was 45 year old at the time of his death.
Srinivas had started playing the instrument when he was five year old and played on stage for the first time when he was nine. He was the first musician to use the instrument in Carnatic music.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2010.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the death of carnatic musician U Srinivas and recalled the mandolin maestro's long-standing contribution to music.
"The Prime Minister expressed grief on the passing away of renowned musician Shri Uppalapu Shrinivas," his official Twitter handle, @PMOIndia said.
"The PM recalled the Mandolin Maestro's dedication & long-standing contribution towards music & added that he will always be remembered," another tweet said.
