While some called the incident barbaric others wondered how such an incident could take place in Mahatma Gandhi's land.

In a horrific incident in Dadri, Gautam Budh Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh, a 50-year-old man, Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death for allegedly eating and storing beef.
His 22-year-old son was also severely beaten. The attack apparently took place after announcement was made in a local temple that the family. District magistrate NP Singh said: “Some locals spread rumours that Akhlaq had cow meat at his home and engaged in cow-slaughtering. Following the rumours, tension ignited and some locals attacked his home in Bisara village.”
Mohammad’s daughter Sajida was quoted saying by Indian Express: “They accused us of keeping cow meat, broke down our doors and started beating my father and brother. My father was dragged outside the house and beaten with bricks. We came to know later that an announcement had been made from the temple about us eating beef.”
While a case or rioting and murder has been registered against 10 people, what was truly farcical was the fact that the police collected meat samples from his house and sent it to the forensic department for examination. Here's how Twitter reacted to the incident:
To have reached a stage where you have to prove the meat in your freezer is mutton to avoid being beaten to death by a mob #IncredibleIndia

Congratulations India, we have our own version of 'But he was burning the Quran' in 'But he was eating beef'. #PakistanBanaDo

In Pakistan, alleged desecration of the book can often lead to violence.
It is incidents like these that should make us hang our head in shame. This, in the land of Mahatma Gandhi! http://t.co/0bybW89RRf

Head hangs in shame my country ? "Dadri, a daughter asks: ‘if it’s not beef, will they bring back my dead father?’ http://t.co/NYxVF8PFdG

Point isn't that one was killed on "mere rumour" he ate beef. So what if he actually ate beef? Stone him to death? Then we laugh at Saudis

The dead man's son Is called Danish My friend tells me I too become In this moment A beef eater's son Flesh within flesh My only identity

The author of Curfewed Night and script-writer of Haider had his say.

Former Justice Katju was at his combative best.
This is the exact Pakistan path. Mob lynchings for "rumor of defiled Quran" = mob lynchings for "rumor of beef eating" Mental disease.

Hatred and intolerance are getting mainstreamed. Don't tell me only one man was killed over beef rumours. Even one killing is one too many.
— Sachin Kalbag (@SachinKalbag) September 30, 2015
The worst thing about that mob lynching of a family,is that police sent the meat for checking if it's beef That is state complicity in crime

Seriously, why was the meat taken for testing? Even if it was beef, does it in anyway justify what happened?
They have taken samples of the meat for forensic testing. How does it matter if it was mutton or beef? Did a man have to die over it?
