The Kalachowike police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly duping an officer from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) to the tune of Rs24 lakh on the pretext of a property deal.

The arrested person has been identified as Dilip Kulkarni, 48, a businessman and resident of Kankavli in Sindhudurg.

According to the police, the complainant in the case is a Bhandup resident who works as an assistant inspector with the ATS and his wife is a teacher. In July last year, the victim came in contact with one Prakash Pednekar and learnt from him about the sale of a property owned by one Dinkar Gulgule.

"The victim showed interest in buying the property and after going through the documents went and saw the property in August. A meeting regarding the deal had taken place at Kulkarni's residence, who is known to Gulgule. In the meeting, the deal was finalised for Rs29 lakh. The responsibility of the deal was undertaken by Kulkarni and his associate Mahendra Sawant," said an officer from Kalachowkie police station.

As per the police, from August 2013 till October this year, the victim paid Rs24.35 lakh to Kulkarni. "An agreement for the property was also made, but even after three months of payment, the property was not transferred on victim's name. Victim tried to contact Kulkarni several times for the same, but Kulkarni started avoiding his calls. In March, Kulkarni threatened the victim over phone," the officer said.

After having learnt that he has been duped, the victim approached police in this regard and a complaint was lodged on September 20. Kulkarni has been booked under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The police have seized a demand draft of Rs6.25 lakh so far.
