A man has been sentenced by a Delhi court to two years in jail for causing death of his newly-wed wife through his negligent act of rash driving of his car, leading to a mishap 13 years ago.

Additional sessions judge Virender Kumar Goyal held Nangloi resident Rajesh Gupta guilty of rashly driving his car leading to the death of the 22-year-old Geeta whom he had married only a month before the mishap in 1999.

It also imposed a fine of Rs7 lakh on Gupta, 40, and said if realised, the amount should be given as compensation to Geeta's parents. The court refused to release Gupta on probation saying the victim's parents have suffered a lot due to the death of their daughter.

The court, however, acquitted Gupta and his family members of the charges of harassing and cruelly treating the victim for bringing insufficient dowry at the time of their marriage. "Except taunting that too was not directly related to the demand of dowry and only one incident of demand of Rs10 lakh for purchase of a shop does not amount to demand of dowry in any manner because for this demand, neither Geeta was treated with cruelty nor was harassed in any manner," it said.

According to prosecution, the accident occurred on August 15, 1999 night when Gupta, who was on his way to Delhi with Geeta, rammed his car into a stationary tanker on Rohtak Road. Both Geeta and Gupta were taken to hospital where the woman was declared brought dead while he was discharged after treatment.

Gupta and his family were facing trial for allegedly harassing the victim demanding Rs10 lakh from her family to start a business.

The court, however, acquitted them saying the police had failed to prove that the victim was treated with cruelty and was harassed for dowry.

Gupta had sought a lenient view submitting that he has to support his wife, whom he married after the death of Geeta, and two children and aged mother. He also said he has suffered the agony of trial since for 13 years.

The court, however, refused to take any lenient view towards him.
