A 60-year-old man, who was allegedly declared dead by a Delhi hospital, was about to be buried when his family found him alive.

The man from Haryana's Panipat was declared dead by doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi but was later found 'alive' while he was being taken for last rites in an ambulance, his family claimed.

The hospital has, however, denied the charge saying that the pateint was discharged and not declared dead.

The victim's family said that they found him 'sweating' and informed the doctors who later confirmed that he was 'alive'. The family has accused the doctors and blamed the hospital of medical 'negligence'.

However, the discharge certificate of the 60-year-old man by Ganga Ram Hospital read, "Patients' condition is critical & he needs further treatment. Patients' attendants want to discharge patient, hence, he is being discharged on Leave Against Medical Advice (LAMA)."

Earlier this week, a government hospital in Maharashtra informed family members of a 50-year-old patient of his death and handed them his body. It was only after the body was brought to the home of the "deceased" Avinash Dadasaheb Bagwade that family members realised it wasn't his.

Enquiries with the Sangli civil hospital authorities revealed that it was indeed not the body of Bagwade, who in fact, was alive and responding to treatment in the hospital.

A hospital official said the reason for this mix-up would be probed. "We will submit a probe report in the next 48 hours and action will be taken against those involved," the hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Subodh Ugane said.

The hospital also failed to identify the person whose body was handed over to the Bagwade family after conducting the post-mortem. The incident took place at the government hospital, where Bagwade was admitted for liver ailment.

Last year, the story of one of the two-newborn babies who were declared dead found to be alive shooked the public. Few days after the baby was found alive, it died due to medical complications. The case at the Shalimar hospital triggered much uproar and protests.

Delhi government on Decelmebr 8 had cancelled the licence of Max Hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh after its doctors wrongly declared a 22-week-old premature baby dead.

A preliminary report submitted by a panel of doctors to the Delhi government had found the hospital guilty of not having followed the prescribed medical norms in dealing with a pair of newborn twins.
