Man beaten to death in Delhi in road rage case; 1 arrested

While initial police investigation suggest that the death was a case of road rage, relatives of the deceased man and locals of Turkman Gate accused AAP government of providing 'space' to criminal elements referring to the accused men.

Massive protests erupted against Aam Aadmi Party government and Delhi police at Turkman Gate area of in Delhi after a 37-year-old father of three was allegedly beaten to death in front of his sons by five locals late on Sunday night with police allegedly being mute spectators to the incident.

While initial police investigation suggest that the death was a case of road rage, relatives of the deceased man and locals of Turkman Gate accused AAP government of providing 'space' to criminal elements referring to the accused men. Protesters showcased posters of the accused men posing with AAP leaders in a photograph.

The protests took a violent turn on Sunday night as a result of which police partially blocked some of the main roads in Central Delhi leading to massive traffic jams in the area all of Monday afternoon.

At 11.30 pm on Sunday when the deceased, later identified as Mohammad Shahnawaz, a local scrap dealer, was coming back from his parents home in the same area. Shahnawaz, took turns to first drop his wife and five-year-old daughter followed by his sons aged 14 and 11. On his way to his home in Mata Sundri area, Shahnawaz vehicle came in front of a i20 car with two of the accused men present inside. The remaining three accused were following the i20 car on a motorcycle.

"My son-in-law had died recently and Shahnawaz, his wife and children had come to visit my grieving daughter," said Noor Jahan, mother of the deceased victim.

One of the accused men ordered Shahnawaz to make way and it was at that moment when his motor-cycle grazed the vehicle bumper. A verbal spat ensued between the Shahnawaz and the accused men. According to eye witness accounts, the five men without any provocation started to beat Shahnawaz while his kids watched the violent commotion in horror.

"One of the children went to a nearby police post and begged for help. The police did refused to come. The boys were hit as well," said the mother as she wept outside the local police station. Responding to the accusations, the Delhi Police commissioner, BS Bassi said that he is personally 'looking into the matter'.

It was only when some locals, upon hearing the shouting, intervened and took Shahnawaz to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.

"My grandchildren told me that he kept saying 'sorry, please forgive me' while the men rained punches on his face and head," the mother told dna. She was among the protesters who were demanding immediate arrest of the accused and requesting chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to come at the spot. A day later police nabbed one of the accused named Waseem and identified as the other accused men.

"It is an extremely unfortunate incident. We have arrested one of the accused men and the hunt is on to nab others," said Bassi.
