The anti-extortion cell (AEC) of the Mumbai police's Crime Branch today arrested a 39-year-old man, practitioner of Unani medicine, for illegal possession of firearms, allegedly meant for sale in the city.

Abdul Sattar Shaikh, resident of Paydhonie in south Mumbai, was arrested with two pistols with magazines, a revolver and two country-made guns besides 67 rounds at Bangalipura in Dongri area, a senior officer said.

Shaikh, originally from Darbhanga in Bihar, had been living in Paydhonie for the last 20 years.

After assisting a renowned `hakim' (Unani doctor) in the area for 17 years, he had started his own practise, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Dilip Sawant.

After arresting him under the Arms Act, police produced Shaikh in a local court which remanded him in police custody till August 21.

Preliminary probe revealed that he had brought the weapons from Bihar, the DCP said.

"We are investigating whether the accused was in touch with any underworld gang or to whom he was trying to sell these weapons," said Vinayak Vast, Senior Police Inspector of the AEC.
