In a rare case, a 65-year-old man who went to hospital with pain in lower abdomen was found to be carrying suspected female uterus inside his body.

The man, father of three children, was admitted to Government District Hospital Baramulla,  on Friday with lower abdomen pain. The female reproductive organ was found when the doctors decided to conduct a surgery.

“He was attended by surgeons who diagnosed him with hernia. But when he was operated upon they found a well defined uterus with fallopian tubes,” Dr Masarat Iqbal Wani, deputy superintendent the hospital, told dna.

Later, a team of three doctors conducted hysterectomy procedure to remove the female reproductive organs from the body of the man. “They look like well defined female reproductive organs. But to be sure we have sent the specimen for pathological tests,” Dr Masarat said.

Doctors said the patient has fully developed male reproductive organs though he had a uterus inside his body. “Externally there were no female sexual organs like vagina. All the female reproductive organs were inside the body,” Dr Abdul Qayoom Shah, senior surgeon who led the team of doctors in the operation, told dna.

Doctors are suspecting that the patient might be a hermaphrodite (a person who has both male and female sex organs, and other sexual characteristics, either abnormally or as the natural condition). “We did not tell him about this problem given the social stigma and psychological trauma associated with such things,” said Dr Shah.

Doctors said it is for the first time in Kashmir’s history that a man who fathered three children was diagnosed and operated upon for such a unique medical problem. “Around eight years ago, I saw a 14-year-old boy with female organs inside but did not remove it.  I only removed the hernia and did not take the chance,”. I told him to come for a follow up but he did not,” said Dr Shah.
