Patidar community leader Hardik Patel met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday at Nabanna, the state secretariat and after the hour-long meeting said that in the 2019 Lok Sabha election there is a need of a united opposition force.

“The biggest opposition force in the country are Congress and Trinamool Congress. Mamata, with her track record of struggle and political experience, should be the face of the united opposition,” Patel said talking to media persons.

Calling her ‘Lady Gandhi’ he said that he would be coming to Bengal in 2019 ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. “Kurmis in Bengal have similar same class status that Patels have in Gujarat. Mamata had written to the Centre for giving the Kurmis a Scheduled Tribe status as against the latest OBC status,” he said.

He added that Mamata had asked him to join TMC. “She offered me to join TMC and lead the party in Gujarat. I have assured her that I will give it a serious thought if I decide to join active politics,” he said and also said that he, in turn, had invited her to come over to Gujarat for interacting with Guajarati women there and that the CM had accepted his invitation.

Mamata, talking to reporters said that she was impressed with Patel, who she described as a ‘bright person and politically conscious’. “I have asked him to join politics and if he does, I will give him all necessary cooperation and support,” Mamata said.
