West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a tirade, not through a speech, but through a book against demonetization at the ongoing Kolkata Book Fair. Titled Note Book, the book, released with four others, is all about the ill-effects of demonetization. It is interesting to note that the books were brought to the Kolkata Book Fair in the evening on Republic Day.

Organisers say that a sixth book, Khusboo, is expected to hit the stalls on Saturday. It is not unusual for the chief minister to launch books penning her thoughts at the Book Fair every year and this year too it was no different.

Speaking about why she felt there was a need to bring out a book on demonetization, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Subrata Mukherjee said: "She loves to write on issues of importance and this book will help us reach out to more people on the ill-effects of demonetization."

The state BJP has not taken kindly to the chief minister's Note Book. Responding to the book, state secretary Rahul Sinha said that "Mamata has written these books out of frustration because there has been no support in the country for her stance against demonetization."

Note Book has been a hit, sales-wise, for the TMC. Officials at the stall of 'Jago Bangla', the TMC mouthpiece, at the Book Fair said that the book has left the other four far behind. "It seems people are more interested in the book as it is topical," said an official at the counter. He added that people were also opting for a set of the five books for Rs 594 after discount.

Note Book also focusses on other issues. The Army deployment at toll plazas in November last year is one.

Mamata's other books show another side to the chief minister and also a touch of self-promotion. Bektitto is a book on Mamata's poems and Manusher Joy 2016 is based on the 2016 Assembly elections in which TMC won a landslide victory. Namanjali, Volume II is a compilation of names in Bengali and English, while in Singur Joyi, Mamata elaborates on how she had struggled on behalf of the people of Singur whose lands were forcefully acquired for Tata Motors and how, 10 years later, in August 2016 they were returned by the verdict of the Supreme Court.
