Two days after West Bengal transport and sports minister Madan Mitra was arrested, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee called for an urgent meeting at her residence on Sunday. The party discussed a number of strategies in the meeting, to turn the heat on the BJP-led Centre and demand the immediate release of Mitra.

Party bigwigs like Subrata Bakshi, Partha Chatterjee, Aroop Biswas and many others were present in the meeting.

Mitra was arrested by the CBI on December 12 in connection with the multi-crore Saradha scam and the charges slapped against him include criminal conspiracy, cheating and misappropriation. He has also been charged with deriving undue financial benefits from the Saradha Group of Companies.

While addressing a gathering of sportspersons near the statue of legendary footballer Gostha Pal on Saturday, Banerjee had said, “The CBI has lost all credentials. It has become ‘his master's voice’. The CBI has become a political tool, so it is time to wind it up. TMC MPs will protest in the Parliament from Monday against the BJP’s politics of vendetta.”

The party has also planned to distribute as many as 10 lakh copies of photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Sahara chief Subrata Roy across the state. According to sources, Banerjee has put out a stern message to the top leadership in her party to continue the agitation and even gather more momentum till Mitra is released.

Interestingly, on Wednesday, Banerjee is likely to meet Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and submit a deputation against the arrest of Mitra.

Meanwhile sportspersons organised a sit-in near Pal’s statue on Sunday, while Mitra's supporters have pledged to go on an indefinite hunger strike at the same venue from Monday and continue their agitation.
