West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday slammed the Nadia district superintendent of police over the rising crime in the district.

Chairing an administrative meeting on Monday, Banerjee pulled up Sheesh Ram Jhajharia over the rising number of infiltrators coming across the border from Bangladesh and indulging in crimes in the district.

“In the past year, the crime rate has increased in the district. Contract killers come in from across the border, commit the crime, and return to their country. Five of my party members have been killed. Why is there an increase of crime in this area? Why is there intelligence failure? This has become routine,” the chief minister said.

Banerjee also spoke of the rise in road-related deaths in the district. “Why do people damage public property after a mishap? Vehicles are torched and rescue operations become difficult. The police should be more responsible after such incidents and ensure that the crime rate comes down,” she added.

The West Bengal CM added that elected representatives of places such as Gayeshpur, Tehatta and Chakdaha should be on alert against attempts to spark a communal unrest. “It is your duty to ensure communal harmony in your respective areas,” she added.

Early on Monday, Mamata visited ISKCON temple at Mayapur in Nadia district and said that the government was working towards making it a destination of religious tourism.

At the temple, she met Alfred Ford, great grandson of Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company and had requested him to invest in Bengal. “I have requested Mr Ford to put up a manufacturing unit in Bengal like the one they have in Chennai. He said he would look into it,” Mamata said.

In a Facebook post she later wrote, ‘Today I visited the ISKCON temple at Mayapur. ISKCON is setting up a world tourism circuit centre at Mayapur and have sought our assistance. We would be very happy to help them. This will definitely be a new landmark in the religious tourism destination not only in the state and the country, but also in the whole world.’
