Two more people were arrested on Sunday in connection with the alleged rape and abduction of a popular Malayalam actress. The police made the two arrests in Coimbatore. A case of attempted rape was filed after the actress was allegedly abducted on Friday night.

Her former driver Martin, who worked with the actress for a day, was arrested on Saturday while main accused Sunil Kumar is in police custody.

"There is progress in the investigation," ADGP B Sandhya told the media.

The incident, reportedly, took place while the actress was returning from a shoot on Friday night. Her car was waylaid by a group of men, including Sunil and Martin, who allegedly forced their way into her car and misbehaved with her at Athani, near Nedumbassery Airport.

The actress, in her complaint to the police, said that her vehicle was hit from the rear by the car. The men forcefully entered her vehicle and directed her driver to proceed to Kochi after threatening him, she said.

During the drive, the men "misbehaved" with her, by clicking her pictures and making a video. They asked the driver to stop the car Palarivattam in Kochi city and fled the area, the actress said.

The actress later reached the house of a director, who informed police.

Director General of Police Loknath Behera said the police was investigating the case, adding they would get back to media after detailed study of the case.

Meanwhile, Malayalam news channel Kairali TV, which is affiliated with the ruling CPI(M), faced backlash for its coverage of the incident. According to The NewsMinute, the channel insinuated that the actress had a relationship with the driver who planned the attack.

On Saturday evening, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said that stringent action would be taken against those involved in the harassment of the actress. "Not a single culprit involved in the incident would be allowed to escape," he wrote in a Facebook post. Expressing concern over the incident, Vijayan said a comprehensive probe was being held into it.
"Police is after the accused. The culprits have been identified," he added. Vijayan said the culprits would be brought to book at any cost and warned those indulging in this kind of activities of stringent action.
