Working on an intelligence tip-off provided by the central intelligence agencies, Delhi Police apprehended a Mumbai-based youth with suspected Islamic State (IS) links from Kashmiri Gate ISBT (inter-state bus terminus) in Delhi on Thursday night.
Identifying the catch as 26-year-old Mohsin Abraham Sayeed, a native of Malad in Mumbai, Delhi Police's Special Cell claimed that he is connected with the recently busted Haridwar module, that was planning to carry out bomb blasts during the ongoing Ardh Kumbh Mela.
The Special Cell had picked up four persons from Roorkee alleging that they were planning bombings at pilgrimage centre of Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, in Roorkee-Haridwar bound trains and in Delhi and some parts of the National Capital Region.
"Mohsin had come to Delhi to meet an associate. He was in touch particularly with Akhlaq, one of the four persons arrested last month," said Delhi Police special commissioner Arvind Deep adding that Rs 85,000 have been recovered from Mohsin's possession.
The central intelligence agencies got the whiff of Abraham during surveillance of the Haridwar module. He was in continuous touch with Akhlaq, the lead person of the module. Besides, Abraham is said to be in touch with a Mumbai-based hawala operator and his role is being looked role as a key conduit in supplying money to IS supporters through hawala channels.
He is also being probed for serving as a link between IS and Ansar-ul-Tawheed, said to be a breakaway faction of Indian Mujahideen led by Shaikh Shafi Armar.
According to Delhi Police, Abraham is self-radicalised and was acting as a financier and had given Rs 50,000 to the four persons, who were arrested from Haridwar last month.
The case may soon be transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), said sources.
The NIA produced the 14 accused persons in the Special Court on Friday. The court remanded three accused – Mohammed Afzal, Abu Anas, Mohammed Imran – in judicial custody and granted NIA further remand of 7 days of the other 11 accused.
