While a lot of precautions such as informing the nearest police station and shifting valuables from home is recommended by the police, cops feel that residents should start adopting newer technologies whereby they are immediately informed if their house is broken into or vehicle stolen.

One of the measures recommended is installation of a burglar alarm. "People spend on decorating their homes and buying various gadgets but not on security systems. We have been asking residents to fit a burglar alarm inside their homes and activate it before leaving so that as soon as an intruder enters the home, it alerts the residents," said a senior police officer.

He said that it was high time people started equipping their homes with such security systems. These security systems cost anywhere between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000. That apart, double locks and double safety doors with grills, apart from grilled windows should be installed.

Another officer said, "We ideally recommend valuables to be kept in bank lockers but if they are hell bent on them keeping at home, they should keep it in electronic lockers which if opened sends an alert message to the occupant's phone." That apart, there are technologies such as fingerprint doors which are highly secured.

Several residents have started following these precautions. Mahesh Sathe, a resident of Hill Road in Bandra West, said, "In this age, we cannot rely on neighbours as they are busy in their lives. Most of us don't even know who is living next door. I have installed a CCTV camera right outside my door and a home watch camera inside. I activate them when we are away and the live feeds are sent to my phone."

As far as vehicles are concerned, cops recommend car alarms and locks for wheels, gears and steering wheels. "There are also GPS devices available which can help monitor the location of a car. We do not have designated parkings in our society so we park on the road. There have been many cases of vehicle thefts in my area and I decided to install one of these. While these may be expensive and may not be of everyday use, they are highly recommended," added Rishi Motwani, a businessman from Andheri.
