Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Uttarayan, Lohri, these are a bunch of festivals, usually celebrated on January 14, mark the beginning festive calendar of each year for most of India. Flying kites, bonfires, enjoying homemade delicacies is the order of the day.

The festival also involves traditional puja rituals for many. The auspicious time this year for Makar Sankranti begins at 07.50 am on January 14. 

According to astrology, on the day of Makar Sankranti, the Sun enters the domain of Capricorn of 'Makara'. The word 'Sankranti' signifies the movement of the Sun from one domain to another. Thus, the day is named Makar Sankranti, which means the movement of the Sun to the domain of Makara.

Punjabis welcome the spring with the bonfires on Lohri, which will be celebrated on Friday, January 13. Gujarat is already in the Uttarayan mood with kites dotting the skies and Maharashtra is ready to gorge on some sesame laddoos. Celebrated in Southern states of India, but mainly in Tamil Nadu, the harvest festival of Pongal begins on January 14 and lasts four days.
