With elections round the corner, the Maharashtra government is moving on the fast track.

Since the code of conduct is likely to be announced in the middle of August, the government has decided to appoint the chairmen and members of various boards fast. These appointments have been pending since the demise of late chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has already submitted its list for these boards to the chief minister's office. Manikrao Thakre, president of Maharashtra State Congress Committee (MPCC), told dna that they want to expedite the approval procedures at the government and party levels.

"We had recently met chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and NCP chief Sharad Pawar and took some decisions that will boost the morale of party workers and better our prospects," Thakre added.

Thakre said he and Chavan had finalised a few names. "These names will be declared soon," he said.

Sources in the chief minister's office told dna that in the next two weeks, there will be a series of cabinet meetings to approve various proposals. "We are making micro-level planning for better performance," Thakre added. The Congress-NCP government has been in power for the last 15 years and there's an anti-incumbency factor.

"Chavan has created an image that the govt likes to sit on files period. Also, the Congress-NCP combine has not yet recovered from the Lok Sabha defeat. There is no enthusiasm among party workers. All these are going to cause them dear," a political observer said.

Ad campaign

The state government has also sanctioned over Rs 120 crore for ad campaigns. "In the Lok Sabha polls, we lacked marketing techniques. On the other hand, people were hypnotised by the high-voltage BJP campaign. Now, the situation is quite different," said an MPCC office-bearer.
