Days after BJP youth wing leader and MP Poonam Mahajan faced criticism by saying that they were guided by ‘urban Naxalites’, the world federation of trade unions in a press release hailing the Kisan March, called the farmers ‘militants’. This statement was also endorsed and retweeted by the All India Kisan Sabha on Thursday

“The World Federation of Trade Unions representing more than 92 million members in five continents, congratulates tens and thousands of militant farmers who participated to the great march, struggling for fair demands. The great march started on March 6 and farmers marched from Nashik to Mumbai. During the 200-kilometre march mass gatherings and solidarity campaigns took place on several regions. The impressive march concluded with successfully forcing the state government to accept in writing the farmers' demands. The class-oriented trade union movement demands prompt implementation of the adopted demands which will improve living and working conditions of thousands of farmers. This struggle is added in the endless list of the various struggles which show the path to popluar stratas over the world (sic),” the statement read.

Earlier, speaking to a TV channel, Mahajan alleged that Maoists were misguiding the farmers who have travelled 180 km on foot to Mumbai to press for their demands.

“Tribals in Maharashtra have been captured by urban Maoism,” Mahajan said, according to News18.

"They (farmers) are holding the flag of Communists, and urban Maoists are misguiding them," she added.

Mahajan represents Mumbai North Central in the Lok Sabha and also heads Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the BJP's youth wing.

The Azad Maidan in South Mumbai turned into a sea of red this morning as thousands of farmers, carrying red flags, converged here after walking around 180 km from neighbouring Nashik district over the last six days.

The farmers planned to surround the Assembly complex to press for their demands of an unconditional loan waiver, and transfer of forest land to tribal farmers who have been tilling it for years.

The CPI(M)-affiliated All India Kisan Sabha is spearheading the protest.

The Congress, the Shiv Sena and other parties have also lent their support to the farmers stir.
