A Ganesh Mandal in Pune has found a novel way to provide free light to poor households using nothing but bottled water. The unique bulbs have already been installed in 10 houses in a Pune slum and the mandal is planning to cover 1,000 households in the remote areas of Gadchiroli district.

The Adarsh Mitra Mandal in Dhankavdi area of Pune has been involved in many social activities, in addition to celebrating a 10-day Ganesh festival every year. Working president of the mandal, Uday Jagtap, informed that he came across information about the bottled light technique, which uses an innovation to provide light equivalent to a 100-watt bulb, but without electricity.

Explaining the project, Jagtap said a 1.75 litre plastic bottle is filled with water. Chlorine and bleaching powder is added to it, so that the water remains clean for a long time. The lid is closed and the bottle is fitted on the roof of the house in such a way that 25% of the upper portion of the bottle is above the roof and the rest inside the house. The sunlight passing through the bottle provides bright light equivalent to a 100-watt bulb.

Jagtap said a well-wisher of the mandal, Uday Kulkarni, who informed him about the method and showed him a video of the same. Then he and a few artistes and craftsmen tried to prepare such bottles at the Janata Vasahat slum. After a few failed efforts, the project was successful and the lights have now been installed in 10 houses of the slum.

Jagtap said he will soon visit Gadchiroli, where his mandal has already been involved in social work of providing bicycles to school students and books to libraries. He said he will visit various remote areas of the district and would ensure installation of 1,000 such bottled lights.

Meanwhile, Sapna Rathi, president of the Innerwheel Club of Pune Daffodils, informed that her club will bear the expenses towards fitting 20 such lights in Janata Wasahat houses.
