A 23-year-old woman was arrested on Friday for allegedly poisoning over 88 people and killing five at a wedding feast. Her intent, claims the police, was to kill her husband and in-laws.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, 23-year-old Pradnya Survase of Khalapur confessed to mixing power used to kill snakes in the dal which was served to a batch of guests at a feast hosted by her relative Subhas Mane.
A senior inspector said Pradya claimed her that since her marriage two years, she was regularly insulted by her in-laws for her dark complexion and accused of not being able to cook well.
Officer Vishwajeet Kaingade said: “Pradnya claims that since her marriage two years ago, she has been insulted regularly for her dark complexion and accused of not being able to cook well. She has named her mother in-law, Sindhu Survase, husband Suresh Govind Survase, sisters in-law Ujwala Pawar and Jyoti Ashok Kadam, and her mother in-law’s sister Sarita Mane and Sarita’s husband, Subhash Mane for the alleged torture.”
Survase, who divorced her first husband, believed that he first marriage broke down because Sarita Mane had cast aspersions on her character. She alleged that the Mane was doing the same with her second marriage.
Subhash Mane had invited over 120 people to his house for a house-warming party and Shinde and her family were among the guests. Guests who ate later complained of nausea, vomiting and tummy ache. About 88 individuals were hospitalised while five passed away.
Her aim was thwarted when the people she wanted to target ate before she could mix the poison in the dal bucket.
