Thane slum dwellers will soon have access to bottled drinking water for just 35 paise per litre. In a tie-up with Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Water Life India Pvt. Lt. — an NGO — is in the process of setting up five RO water purification plants in the city.

A 60-hour water cut in Thane has thrown people as well as the civic administration off gear. Apart from the water supplied by TMC, residents are also dependent on tankers and bore wells, if any. The situation is tough in slums and hilly areas like Mumbra and Kalwa where even drinking water does not reach residents.

"Our plants will purify water from wells and bore wells and this water, which is as good as Himalaya bottled water, will be sold through kiosks," said Indraneil Das, executive director and one of the promoters of Water Life. The five places where these plants will come up are Vijaynagari, Manisha Nagar, Azadnagari, Atkoneshwar Nagar and Lokmanya Nagar.

The water will be sold at 35 paise per litre. Each plant will cost over Rs25 to Rs30 lakh. Water Life has 7,000 such plants across India. "India spends Rs80,000 crore annually to fight water-borne diseases. We started these plants thinking of getting rid of these diseases," said Das.

The ground breaking ceremony for the first plant in Thane was done on May 3 at King Kongnagar, Vijaynagari. "The first plant will come up in my ward by May-end and people will get pure drinking water at affordable rates," said corporator Manohar Dumbre from ward number 2. "We spend Rs15 to Rs20 on buying gutkha, cigarettes and even bottled water. Why not buy this water and help your family lead a healthy life," he added.
