A landmine protected vehicle of the C-60 commandos on Wednesday came under a landmine attack by Maoists in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra killing one Jawan and injuring 19 others.  "The incident took place Wednesday evening in Hemalkasa village of naxal infested Bhamragad Taluka when a team of the C-60 commandos was patrolling the area," district collector ASR Naik told DNA.

Sources said that the blast followed by heavy firings from both the sides. However, there was no report of any Maoist being killed or injured till the time of going to press.

Earlier in the day, a CRPF jawan and two Maharashtra Police personnel were injured in an exchange of fire with the Maoists, Naik said.

The attacks were carried out amidst tight vigilance in all Naxal affected districts in the country post the attack on CRPF personnel in Sukma, Chhattisgarh.

Besides, Commissioner of Police Dr Abhijit Deshmukh and collector ASR Naik both were away for an official meet in Mumbai when the attacks took place. Dr Deshmukh rushed to Gadchiroli on Thursday morning.

The martyred Jawan has been identified as Suresh Telami. All the injured men are being treated at Hemalkasa, Gadchiroli civil hospital and Nagpur Medical college for bone injuries occurred due to high pressure generated inside the targeted vehicle, officials said.

This is the biggest attack post 2013 when 19 jawans were martyred in two different attacks.

Ironically, after these two serious incidents, the C-60 unit had been focusing a lot on to curb the landmines.

The team of security force personnel had been conducting operations in the area.

On April 24, twenty-five CRPF personnel were killed and six wounded in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, the deadliest attack by Maoists targeting security forces this year.
