Amid ongoing woes for the state government, a Maharashtra BJP minister has now found himself in controversy for allegedly building a bungalow on a land reserved for a fire brigade station.

Maharashtra Co-operation, Marketing and Textiles minister Subhash Deshmukh's bungalow in Solapur is reportedly built on a land reserved for a fire brigade station and garden, reported Indian Express.A two-acre plot in Majarewadi, along Hotagi Road in Solapur, which was already under a reservation, was purchased in 2000 for Rs 50 lakh by Deshmukh and nine others.A report said that as per records, the permission for the construction was given twice in April 2004 and July 2012, with a condition by the building permissions section of Solapur Municipal Corporation.

However, as the reservation of the land still continues, Deshmukh and his co-owners have been issued a notice by the corporation. In January 2001, the municipality had denied a permission for the building after the owners wrote a letter seeking a nod for construction, saying he land was reserved for a fire brigade and mini shopping centre. In March 2004 too, the authorities said that his request cannot be considered due to the reservation. In July 2012, civic body granted construction permissions, subject to the state government’s decision on cancelling the reservation.

However, in November 2011, the fire brigade department had said that a its centre on the reserved plot would benefit industries along Hotagi Road. In July 2012, the civic body granted construction permissions again, this time for a ground-plus-one floor structure, including a kitchen, dining space, family room, bedroom, store, servant room, waiting lodge and a toilet on the ground floor, and a bedroom, guest bedroom, hall, gymnasium and toilet on the first floor. Again, the permission was given, subject to the state government’s decision on cancelling the reservation.

Meanwhile, the fire brigade department gave its remarks when sought by the Town Planning department in November 2011 that developing a fire brigade centre on the reserved plot would benefit industries along Hotagi Road. In May 2013, the fire brigade department and the town planning department of the municipality also communicated regarding cost of acquiring the plot to construct a new fire brigade centre.

Activist Mahesh Chavan from the district, in the PIL filed in Bombay High Court has accused the corporation of inaction despite complaining again and again. Deshmukh has refused to comment on the issue.
