Even after 67 days of the rape and murder of a minor Maratha girl in Kopardi in Ahmednagar district, the local police is yet to file the charge-sheet.

According to the sources in state home department, the local police are grappling in the dark. Saurabha Tripathi, police superintendent of Ahmednagar district said, few reports regarding the Kopardi case are awaiting, therefore there is a delay. "However, it will be filed," he added. When asked to provide details of the reports awaited he refused to comment.

"It was clear that the girl was raped and murdered. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had also made the announcement in the preceding monsoon session that this case will be put on the fast track court. He also appointed noted public prosecutor Ujjawal Nikam yet there is no progress in the case leading to the delay in filling the charge-sheet. There are some gaps in the case therefore there is delay in charge-sheet filing," sources said upon requested anonymity.

The Maratha community has been protesting against the government and organising silent rallies across the state with each district witnessing large numbers of people participating. Apart from amendments in the atrocity act, the agenda of the morchas are also to seek reservation for the Maratha community and concrete help for the farmers etc.

The accused in the Kopardi case threatened the parents of the victim saying he will file an atrocity case against them if they lodged a rape and murder case against him. "This triggered the unrest in the Maratha community. Why should someone threaten to lodge the atrocity case against the person whose daughter has been raped and murdered. Thus followed the demand of amendment in the atrocity act," said senior NCP leader upon requested anonymity.

When called, BJP leader Ram Shinde from Ahmednagar said that he has no clue about the development of the case. "I have not reviewed the Kopardi case in a long time."
