Even as the Devendra Fadnavis-led state government is cornered by the rising tide of protests by the dominant Maratha community seeking quotas, the Shiv Sena set the cat among the pigeons by claiming that the BJP was considering a leadership change in the state.

“Today’s situation in Maharashtra is the failure of the political leadership. These discussions (about the chief minister being changed) are happening not in Maharashtra, but according to my information, in the BJP,” said Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut, who is also the executive editor of the Sena mouthpiece Saamna.

“Such a huge agitation is taking place, Maharashtra is up in flames. Don't go only by what is happening in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Palghar, this atmosphere is prevailing across Maharashtra. It is very unfortunate that the government is missing from the political landscape. We feel that Maharashtra should not be in a churn or unstable. The government, instead of running away from the situation or donning the role of the bystander, must hold discussions with the protestors for a way out,” stressed Raut.

Meanwhile, an editorial in Saamna, which has Uddhav as the editor, blamed the BJP for complicating the situation by making quota promises to caste groups before the elections but failing to translate them into reality.

“The Maratha community wants reservations. The government says it cannot take a decision due to the issue being sub-judice. Even if this is true, for how long with the government use the court as a shield? These hurdles should be overcome by the government and the issue of Maratha reservations should be resolved,” the editorial said.

It described the Maratha protest and the death of an agitator Kakasaheb Shinde who had jumped into the Godavari river on Monday as something that had muddied the society in Maharashtra and made it unstable. It asked the state government to introspect on why things had taken a turn for the worse.

“The waters of the Godavari in which Kakasaheb Shinde drowned himself have rushed to the chief minister like a surge of anger. This wave cannot be stopped using any tactic,” the editorial said, while adding it did not agree with Fadnavis’ claim that Maratha groups were likely to conduct acts of sabotage during Akadashi Ekadashi at Pandharpur.

“The BJP had promised to do away with roadblocks for quotas after coming to power. The Dhangar community had also been promised reservations. But all these promises were converted into assurances. The BJP is clinging to power after forgetting these promises,” the Sena said, adding that leaders like Mahadeo Jankar, Vinayak Mete and Sadabhau Khot were co-opted by the BJP.

It lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being abroad when such tension prevailed in Maharashtra.
