In a major announcement concerning healthcare in the state, Maharashtra Health Minister Eknath Shinde, on Friday, announced that the state will fill up 10,000 of the 15,000 vacant posts for doctors in Maharashtra. Moreover, Tata cancer institute will also open its branch in Thane so that cancer patients from the neighbouring areas can go there rather than commuting all the way to Mumbai.

To improve the health infrastructure in Maharashtra, public works department (PWD) and minister Eknath Shinde said that the government will recruit 10,000 doctors on an urgent basis. "Moreover the 738 doctors who work on contract basis in the primary health care centres in rural areas will be appointed on a permanent basis," said Shinde.

"Tata cancer hospital is under a lot of pressure as patients from across districts come there for cancer treatment. Hence, the hospital will open its branch in Thane and the Thane municipal corporation is ready to give land for the same," he said.

There will also be chemotherapy centres in every district. Since the government hospitals have CT scan and dialysis centres, patients have to wait in long queues for these services. Thus, a CT scan and dialysis centre will also be opened at the district level.

"The Union government have agreed to provide Rs 1,600 crores to ESIS hospitals in Maharashtra," he said. The ESIS (employment state insurance scheme) society will be headed by the chief secretary of the state. "This infusion of funds will go a long way in improving the infrastructure and services of ESIS hospitals in the state," he added.
