Former Maharashtra minister Naseem Khan today accused the state government of shielding the owner of the diamond jewellery export firm that allegedly denied job to a Muslim youth on the basis of religion.

"It is clear that the government and (Mumbai) police are shielding the diamond firm owner as no arrest has been made even after four days of filing the FIR," Khan told PTI.

The senior Congress leader threatened a massive protest if the arrest was not done within next two to three days.

Management graduate Zeshan Ali Khan had applied for an opening at Hari Krishna Exports Pvt Ltd here, and according to him, he received a response within 15 minutes which said they hire only non-Muslim candidates.

"I have asked senior inspector of BKC police station and DCP of the zone to look into the matter seriously," Khan said. He said that the issue would be raised in the Assembly also.
Earlier, this morning, Zeshan met Khan along with his father and urged him to follow the case as he alleged laxity on the part of police.

"I am not saying that I'm unhappy with the proceedings, but I would have been more than happy if some arrest had been made so far," Zeshan said.

Meanwhile, senior police inspector of BKC police station K Nigde said they are in the process of investigation and arrest would be done accordingly.

On May 21 when the matter surfaced, taking a serious note of the incident, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a probe and Mumbai police registered a case against the business house.

The matter also prompted the National Commission for Minorities to seek an explanation from the business house as it drew criticism from the BJP-led Centre, which said religious discrimination cannot be allowed.

"Thanks for your application. We regret to inform you that we hire only non-Muslim candidates," the company had replied in response to Zeshan's application.

Later after facing flak, the company issued a clarification claiming it was "an error" by an HR trainee against whom appropriate action has been taken.

A case has been registered against the company under IPC sections 153-B (imputation and assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 153B(1b) (asserting or publishing that any class of persons shall by reason of their being members of any religious, racial or language or regional group or caste or community be denied or deprived of their rights as citizens of India).
