Maharashtra govt reviews measures for prevention of malnutrition death in tribal areas

Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sumit Mullick on Wednesday held a core committee meeting to review the ongoing measures to prevent death of infant in the tribal areas.

He directed health, women and child development and tribal departments to take necessary precautions for preventing various diseases whcih occur during the monsoon.

Additional Chief Secretary of Health Department Dr. Vijay Satbir Singh, Principal Secretary of Finance, Vandana Krishna, Tribal Department Secretary Manisha Verma, Women and Child Welfare Secretary Vinita Singhal, Secretary of Rural Development Asim Gupta. Along with Palghar, Nandurbar, Amravati Collectors, Zilla Parishad CEO, various officers and NGOs working in tribal areas were present.

Death of tribal kids during monsoon period when their parents don't get work has been a major issue since past many years. Last year, over 600 kids had died in Palghar district only in three months, which led to rap from Human rights commission and High Court.

State government then constituted a taskforce and constantly made various efforts for bringing down infant mortality rate. "There will be noticeable results achieved, if there is successful implementation of the schemes by coordinating with different departments and district administration. Create a roadmap to provide treatment and nutrition to the malnourished children through the Rural Development Committee," CS told the officials.

The chief secretary said in the meeting, anganwadi’s should make available medicines for diarrhea, fever and cough. While arrangements should be made to provide medicines as first aid to sick children through 'Asha' workers and such experimental projects should be implemented. He also said that, Anganwadi workers should be paid on time.

The Chief Secretary gave instructions to the concerned authorities and committee members to act on the issues related to health facilities, Integrated Child Development Department vacant post, Anganwadis food supply and NGO activation. The Chief Secretary also said that the health department should take cognizance of the adequacy of medicines in the remote areas.
