Soon, Bollywood and tinsel town will have a new location for shooting movies and television serials with the state government keen on developing a film city at Nashik.

"This new film city at Nashik will take the load off from the existing film city at Goregaon in Mumbai... Film makers, too, are also looking for off-beat locations and are hence zeroing down on sites like Wai and Mahabaleshwar," explained a senior government official.

The project will also boost film production and tourism in Nashik, while creating employment opportunities.

"Nashik's proximity to Mumbai will also serve as a driver for it," the official said. "Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, was born in Nashik and this project will also commemorate his memory," he added.

The government had also appointed a consultant for a pre-feasiblity and financial viability study of the proposed film city. While the report had concluded that the Nashik film city project was technically feasible, there were doubts on its financial viability the official admitted.

"However, we will give out studios on lease to generate revenues," he said, adding that they were also banking on tourist inflows, need for new locations and the possibility of linking the film city to wine tourism in Nashik, which is seen as the country's wine capital, as some factors which would help drive its business.

Around 116.92 hectare of government land is available at four villages in Nashik district namely — Balwant nagar, Mundhe gaon, Rajurbahula and Vilholi. A survey of Mundhe Gaon and Rajurbahula sites revealed that they were suitable for film city. Later, records for 54.58 hectare land at Mundhe Gaon were sought from the district collector and these have been sent to the state government for further action. The government has asked the collector of Nashik district to send a detailed proposal and is following up on the same.

The government is also working on a master plan for development of its two film cities — Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon and the 78-acre Kolhapur Chitranagari.
