At least three chidren were killed and several hospitalized after a case of suspected food poisoning.

The incident took place early Tuesday in Mahad village in Raigad district, which is around 80 kilometres from Mumbai.

According to the Kualapur police, Subhash Mane, one of the villagers had organized a dinner to celebrate buying a house. “He had organized a dinner on occasion of vastu shanti pooja,” a police officer said. The function was a whole day function and the food served was dal and rice. People who had eaten earlier in the day did not suffer from the ill-effects of the food, which raises suspicion that the food may have contaminated during the course of the day.

After the dinner, many children were complaining of stomach aches, and began vomiting. They were rushed to hospital where three children succumbed to their illness. Four childtren were shifted to Pragati hospital and Ashtavinayak Hospital in Panvel while one is in MICU.

Around 30 to 40 people have been admitted in MGM Hospital Kamothe and D Y Patil Hospital in Nerul in Navi Mumbai. Police sold that the condition of many patients are critical.

A doctor at MGM Hospital said that he suspected some chemical powder had been mixed with the food, but this could be confirmed only after tests.
