Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday said he would not share the stage with PM Narendra Modi on Thursday to inaugurate the Nagpur Metro. Chavan said Modi used the JNPT SEZ inaugural function at Navi Mumbai for election campaign. “The PM crossed the line by giving government functions a political flavour. This has been done repeatedly. So, I decided to skip the function in Nagpur. The BJP in Maharashtra on Thursday termed as "unfortunate" Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's decision to boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modi's programme in Nagpur and said Congress should introspect why people are "unhappy" with the state leadership.

Confirming his decision of skipping the event, Chavan tweeted:

Meanwhile, taking a dig at Congress, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, "how would the grand old party ignore the 'Modi mantra of good governance."

Criticising Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's move, Vinod Tawde, leader of opposition in legislative council said, "Chief Minister went to Vidarbha, where he was booed by farmers, they were not BJP workers.Congress must introspect." Tawde also said that it is surprising that Maharashtra Chief Minister is boycotting Prime Minister's program, I had even called him yesterday and asked him to come.

On wednesday Tawde had twitted that the Chief Minister not attending PMO India's program in Nagpur gives a signal that they can't and won't work with Modi government.

BJP state spokesperson Madhav Bhandari also slammed the CM's decision, saying it was an "insult" to the people of Vidarbha region.

"They are boycotting the event in Nagpur only because they are miffed with the people for giving all 10 Lok Sabha seats (in Vidarbha region) to the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance during the recently held (general) elections," Bhandari said.

Chavan had made the announcement after Haryana Chief Minister Bhupindersingh Hooda was booed away by the crowd in Kaithal while he was sharing the stage with the Prime Minister. He alleged that although the function was a government event, most of the people present in it were BJP workers and they were chanting slogans praising Modi giving it an aura of a party function.

Sources told dna that Chavan took the decision of skipping the function in Nagpur at the eleventh hour. “Everything was booked. It is a political decision. Chavan feels Modi is humiliating and arrogant. So, it is better to skip the function and send a straight message to Modi that they do not care about the PM if he does not respect others and does not honour the decorum of government functions,” said a source close to Chavan.

Chavan said that in a recent special economic zone (SEZ) inauguration function at JNPT in Navi Mumbai, Modi used the dias for election campaign. “The PM crossed the line by giving political flavour to the government function. And, this thing has been done repeatedly. So, I have decided to skip the function on Thursday in Nagpur.”
