Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday spoke to former Union Finance Minister and veteran BJP leader Yashwant Sinha and appealed him to withdraw his agitation.

Sinha, who was detained and released by Akola police on Monday, is camping at the police ground there against the state government's apathy towards farmers in Vidarbha region.

ÇM has chosen to step in especially when Sinha is adamant and he is receiving support from various political parties and farmers' organisations.

Sinha is leading a protest by Cotton and Soyabean farmers to press for compensation for the crops damaged by pests, purchase of all farm produce at an MSP of Rs 50,000 per acre for cotton farmers affected by the pink bollworm disease. Further, the government should immediately address issues with regard to farm insurance and relief to drought-affected villages.

Fadnavis has assured to sympathetically look into the demands. He also deputed the Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil to mediate. Patil has asked the Akola police not to use force against agitating Sinha and farmers.

So far Sinha has not made up his mind to call off agitation as he is busy interacting with the farmers who have gathered in large numbers at the venue.

Sinha has also received support from various quarters including the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, former Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray, Maharashtra’s former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Ashok Chavan, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana MP Raju Shetti and Bharatiya Republican Party leader Prakash Ambedkar.

Besides, former minister Arun Shourie, BJP MPs Shatrughna Sinhah and Varun Gandhi have also extended their support to Sinha.
