Out of 21 seats across the state that went to polls, the NCP-Congress alliance won highest number of seats - 11 - while the BJP and the Shiv Sena got 5 and 2 seats respectively.
While the NCP got the highest number of seats, 6, in this bypoll, the Shiv Sena is the biggest loser.
Interestingly, in the municipal corporation bypoll, out of six seats, the BJP did not win a single seat. The Shiv Sena won the bypoll to Ward 173 of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with its candidate, Ramdas Kamble, defeating the Congress' Sunil Shetye by a margin of 845 votes. The seat was earlier reprsented by Shiv Sena corporator Prahlad Thombare whose death necessitated the bypoll.
In Pune, NCP's Pooja Kodre defeated Sena's Monica Tupe by a margin of 3,528 votes, the State Election Commission said.
Congress' Suman Sachdev polled defeated the BJP's Sakshi Pannani by over 200 votes in Ulhasnagar. In Solapur, Congress' Taufiq Hatture won by beating his nearest rival AIMIM candidate Sheikh Pir Ahmed Karim.
Congress also secured the win in Ahmednagar where Vishal Kotkar beat Sena's Vijay Pathare.
In Jalgaon, the BJP's Gehi Mayadevi won unopposed while the Congress won three seats each in Armori, Biloli and Chandrapur panchayat samitis.
The NCP bagged a seat each in Sadak-Arjuni, Tuljapur, Vaijapur and Hinganghat panchayat samitis.
The BJP and Sena won one seat each in Dhule and Gangapur while former Congress leader Narayan Rane's Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksha won one seat in Kudal panchayat, SEC officials said.
In Nashik, the BJP trailed at number-3 where the MNS' Vaishali Bhosale won with a comfortable margin. The bypoll was held there after the party's sitting corporator Surekha Bhosale died.
The NCP said the BJP lost because of its anti-farmer anti-common man policies.
“We have been telling that the wind has changed. We not only won in the rural area but also in urban pockets. The urban pockets are also coming back to us. People are frustrated with the policies of the BJP government which are anti-farmer and against the common man. You cannot win the elections after elections on events and newspaper advertisements,” said Nawab Malik, the NCP spokesperson.
He said that the Shiv Sena has lost the credibility in this elections.
“It got only two seats. Sena was trying to enjoy the power as well as criticise the government policies. People are not fool. They are smart enough to understand the hypocritical nature of the Shiv Sena. In 2019, the Shiv Sena will be the biggest loser,” Malik said.
Ashok Chavan, Maharashtra Congress president welcomed the bypoll results.
“Not the single section of the society is happy with the BJP government. BJP has lost the trust as well as credibility. You cannot fool the people all the time with the false and tall promises. This is the beginning. There will be a tremor in 2019 for the BJP,” Chavan said.
The BJP, on the other hand, tried to downplay the bypoll results saying it is not the actual mandate of the people.
“We are very much in competition and sure of coming to power in 2019 also. We had made a couple of mistakes that will be corrected soon. We are reaching to people in the larger way. We are confident of changing the public opinion. The wrong and anti-government propaganda is going in a big way, we have to counter it successfully,” a senior BJP leader said, requesting anonymity.
