Ambedkarite thinker and former head of the Marathi department at Shivaji University, Professor Dr. Krishna Kiravle was on Friday afternoon hacked to death in Kolhapur, reported Zee 24Taas. The incident took place at Kiravle's residence in Mhada colony in Rajendra Nagar.
Though the exact motive behind the murder is not known, police suspect a carpenter's hand in the act, whose payment was reportedly due. The suspect has been taken into the custody and the police are investigating the matter.
As soon as the news spread across the city, several people who were part of Ambedkarite movement rushed to his home to pay homage.
According to DivyaMarathi, Kirvale was a resident of Beed district's Sirsala and had completed his education from Aurangabad's Milind College. Kiravle had also written a book on Dalit movement and literature. He was the President of the 31st Asmitadarsh Sahitya Sammelan that took place in Jalgaon in 2012.
In a similar incident in February 2015, communist leader Govind Pansare and his wife Uma has been shot by unidentified persons near their house in Kolhapur when they were returning from their morning walk. Pansare succumbed to injuries at Breach Candy hospital four days later.
