In arguably the biggest push to affordable housing segment in the state in recent times, the central government approved nearly 21,000 homes on a single day on Wednesday under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY).

Significantly, 18,000 of the homes are to come up in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

In a meeting on Wednesday, the Centre's appraisal committee approved nearly 15,000 homes for Navi Mumbai, 3,000 for Thane and 3,000 for the rest of Maharashtra.

"Every proposal under the PMAY has to be first approved by the state's appraisal committee and is then moved to the central committee. All the files that were passed by the Centre were approved by the state committee a few months ago. This approval is significant in terms of the sheer numbers," said a senior officer from the state's appraisal committee for PMAY.

For the houses, around 300 sq ft each, the central government allocates Rs 1.5 lakh, while the state's share is Rs 1 lakh.

The 15,000 homes approved for Navi Mumbai will be constructed by CIDCO at Taloja, Kalamboli, Kharghar and Dronagiri. The project comprises homes for the Economically Weaker Section and the Lower Income Group. Bhushan Gagrani, Managing Director of CIDCO, confirmed the development.

The Thane Municipal Corporation will construct the 3,000 homes approved for the district. The homes will come up on government land in Betwade, Mhatardi and Padle. Two of the projects are in Betwade, while Mhatardi and Padle areas — villages located near Diva in Thane — will get one project each.

Forty per cent of the 3,000 homes are reserved for project-affected people, while 40 per cent are for affordable segment and 20 per cent will be for the middle income group.

The 3,000 homes approved for the rest of the state will come up at districts such as Chandrapur, Nashik and others, and will be anchored by MHADA.
