The Maharashtra Government on Wednesday rolled out the first phase of the loan waiver package by providing benefit of the scheme to 8.4 lakh eligible farmers worth Rs 4,000 crore. The first phase will benefit 4.62 indebted farmers, and 3.78 lakh farmers will be included in the incentive scheme list.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that banks will start providing actual benefit of the loan waiver to farmers from Monday, and farmers' accounts would be cleaned up.

Giving a certificate of eligibility for loan waiver to a select 70-odd farmers from all districts of the state at a function at Sahyadri Guest House, Fadnavis stated that it was the biggest ever loan waiver provided by any state. Ministers Chandrakant Patil, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Subhash Deshmukh and Diwakar Raote were present on the dais. Fadnavis said that 4.62 lakh farmers will be provided with a loan waiver worth Rs 3,200 crore, while 3.78 lakh farmers would get Rs 800 crore towards incentives since they have been regularly repaying the loan amount.

Fadnavis stated that Maharashtra is the only state providing incentives to honest farmers regularly repaying the loan amount.

Stating that it was a day with a sense of fulfillment, Fadnavis said that by November 15, scrutiny of almost 75 to 80 per cent applications for loan waiver would be complete and benefits would be transferred to the farmers' accounts. The CM said that his government was never against loan waiver, and stated that due to three-fold increase in capital investment in agriculture, the agricultural growth rate has gone up by 12.5 per cent.

Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar made it clear that while providing the loan waiver package, his department had not diverted any money from the social justice department, and this criticism was made out of ignorance. He added that loan waiver was the first step of the agricultural revolution in the state.
