Taking serious note of rising instances of economic frauds—which is expected to rise even more, thanks to digitization—the Maharashtra government has approved a proposal for sanctioning dedicated Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySP) Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for each district. These DySPs will be tasked to supervise big economic offence cases, guide the team, ensure proper investigation into offences, and investigate the cases on their own.

It was Director General of Police, Satish Mathur, who came up with the idea of independent DySPs EOW.

"Economic offences are on the rise and now with digitization such crimes will rise further. Until now, every district has DySPs for various divisions. As of now, only Mumbai, Pune Thane and Nagpur have dedicated EOW officers and their supervisory officers," said a senior state police officer.

According to the sources in the Home department, the government has approved the proposal and a Government Resolution (GR) will soon be issued on the matter. Now all districts will have a dedicated DySP EOW who will handle all economic fraud cases. These DySPs will mostly be placed within the district police headquarters.

"In October, a five-day training course was conducted in Nashik wherein ACP rank officers were imparted basic level training on tackling economic offences. Once a GR is issued, we would handpick officers for the post of DySP EOW and would give them a second round of training before they assume the charge of EOW," said the officer.

"DySPs EOW will ease the burden on the State CID. In the past we have seen some important economic offence cases being handed over to State CID months after them being registered and investigated by the local police. Quality of investigation by the local police in these cases were also very weak," the officer said.
