A 21-member core committee comprising farmers' leaders and experts gave a two-day ultimatum to the Maharashtra government on Thursday to take a decision on crop loan waiver, remunerative price for agricultural produce and implementation of MS Swaminathan Commission report. They added that if the government did not act, then they would hold a morcha at all Tahsil offices on June 12 and a rail roko on June 13 across Maharashtra.

The committee, which was formed earlier this week, defying the leadership of Kisan Kranti Morcha (KKM) to lead the farmers agitation and oppose its deal with the state government on crop loan waiver, indicated that the agitation will be further stepped up. The committee met for the first time as the farmers strike, which had started on June 1, ended on Wednesday.

The committee comprises Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana founder and MP Raju Shetti, legislator Bachu Kadu, agriculture experts Ajit Nawale and Giridhar Patil and Shetkari Sanghatana leader Raghunathdada Patil

Nawale told DNA, “It is high time the government must act instead of making mere announcements.”

Shetti led a scathing attack against the government saying that he was repenting for extending support to BJP pre and post election. He termed his associate and now the minister of state for agriculture and marketing Sadabhau Khot a traitor.

Kadu warned that the farmers will stop the supply of vegetables to the residence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. “Farmers continue to reel under crisis even though there has been change in the government,” he noted.

The Peasants and Workers Party legislator Jayant Patil said discontinuation of water supply to Mumbai will be the next course of agitation. “If farmers from Nashik and Raigad districts decide, water supply to Mumbai can be disconnected. Farmers do not fear about police cases as they can be withdrawn after change in the government,” he added.
