The rift between Congress and NCP was evident on Sunday when they addressed separate press conferences on the eve of the Monsoon Session of the State Assembly, scheduled to begin on Monday. Interestingly, both the Congress and the NCP, on Sunday, handed over separate letters to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, while boycotting the tea party he hosted.

Referring to the boycott by the Opposition, Chief Minister Fadnavis said, "The typist seems to be the only thing common to both because the letter stating the tea party boycott submitted by the NCP and the Congress were identical."

Addressing a press conference at Sahyadri Guest House, Fadnavis said that both the letters are essentially the same, including paragraphs, punctuation, and language. Fadnavis said that it was perhaps for the first time that the Opposition is divided and is addressing separate press conferences on the eve of an Assembly session.

When asked why the contributions of Balasaheb Thackeray will not be recounted along with other leaders, Fadnavis reminded that the entire House, including members of all parties, have already shown their support in erecting a Balasaheb Thackeray memorial. There is no reason, therefore, to make an issue of not mentioning the late Sena leader in the upcoming session on August 5.

Earlier in the day, NCP refrained from attending a meeting called by Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, the leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, by protesting the effort of Congress to include the name of Indira Gandhi in the August 5 list of business.

The August 5 session will be dedicated to discussing the contributions of stalwarts such as Deendayal Upadhyay, Indira Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, and Ganpatrao Deshmukh.
