In the wake of farm labourers dying due to pesticide poisoning, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called it a serious matter and directed state officials? to take action against those selling unlicensed products, and wholesellers who supplied pesticides without verification. He also ordered action against manufacturing companies.

Fadnavis on Sunday visited Yavatmal and met farm labourers undergoing treatment after being poisoned with the pesticide sprayed on crops.

He ordered an inquiry into bogus seeds or pesticides, if they were coming to Maharashtra from other states and fix responsibility in this regard. After a review meeting with officials from concerned departments including agriculture, health and revenue, Fadnavis said that deaths like this were a matter of serious concern and the authorities would conduct a regular review. He ordered revenue and agriculture officials to prepare a schedule so that every village is covered.

The chief Minister said that an inquiry had already been announced in this regard and it would be conducted by additional chief secretary (Home) and an SIT.

The officials informed the chief minister that 8,000 new kits had been provided for pesticide spraying and Rs 50 lakh had been provided to Yavatmal Civil Hospital for treatment of these patients so that there was no issue of availability of medicines. The officials informed the Chief Minister that special teams had been formed for regular inspection of the Krishi Seva Kendras.

Fadnavis said that all patients were improving and those in the ICU were also out of danger. He said that the extent of patients being brought to hospital was also coming down and on an average, one patient was being brought and this was coming down.

There have been 22 deaths in Yavatmal district and hundreds of labourers have been infected in the past four months. Guardian Minister Madan Yerawar and Vaantrao Naik Sheti Swavalamban Mission chief Kishore Tiwari accompanied Fadnavis to the district.

Stating that structural changes are being explored, Fadnavis said that the state government would suggesting measures to the Union Government so that amendments in concerned laws were made. He said that the treatment protocol regarding such spraying is under preparation to avoid any death in such matters such incident is prevented in future. Protocol for antidotes in case of such praying is also being prepared.
